Paint your own Pierneef!!  I have been wanting to say that for a long time.

Jacob Hendrik Pierneef is one of South Africa's most well-know painters, known for his specific and characteristic style he painted the South African landscape with.  He had a way of simplifying images, without compromising on composition, he always produced a well-balanced image, accurately portraying the peaceful and tranquil environment of the South African landscapes.

This specific painting is called Lion's Head and is one of the 28 Johannesburg Station Panels.  The Station Panels were one of the largest commissions Pierneef received in his lifetime and he was quote famous for them.  He was to paint 28 South African scenes, places or landscapes, inspiring tourism both within and to South Africa.  These panels were very big and was made to be displayed at the Johannesburg Train Station.  During 1929 - 1932 he travelled extensively in the country to complete these 28 panels, together with 3 more depicting indigenous trees.  This typical Cape scene forms part of this wonderful collection.  The panels are currently on display at the Rupert museum in Stellenbosch and the La Motte website contains extensive information about both the panels and Pierneef, should you be interested to explore his history a bit more.
